As rent prices in Fremont rise, many boutiques have sprouted up to cater to the yuppie lifestyle. In upscale ateliers one can buy anything from French perfume to Venetian stationary to organic essential oil to handcrafted purses to vegan shoes. However, the spirit of Fremont still thrives in businesses supplying residents with alternative habits. The Silent-Heart-Nest Restaurant offers meditation classes and serves customers who wish to forgo a carnivorous lifestyle. |
Deluxe Junk and other antique stores dot the Fremont streets. The Fremont Drum School provides an array of supplies for the drum enthusiast. Maya Whole Health Studio offers yoga and pilates classes in an airy studio overlooking the Fremont Cut. The Touchstone Bakery is a collectively owned business dedicated to the use of whole-grain, organic ingredients. At the Indoor Sun Shoppe one can find not only lighting supplies to grow unusual and tropical plants inside, but also light boxes used to combat SAD (Seasonal Affected Depression). Coffee connoisseurs swoon over the fair-trade, organic coffee served at Cafe Ladro. Although Fremont has become a hip neighborhood in recent years, it is possible for the aging hippie and the trendy twenty-something to live together in harmony. (--MD) |
